Heart Tissue Staining

Heart tissue staining is a biological technique that uses dyes or labeled probes to make the cellular and structural features of cardiac tissue visible for microscopic analysis. During processing, tissue is preserved, sectioned, and exposed to stains that bind selectively to components such as nuclei, cytoplasm, connective tissue, or muscle fibers, producing contrasting colors that reveal tissue organization and abnormalities. Researchers and clinicians use stained heart sections to assess cardiomyocyte structure, fibrosis, inflammation, vascular changes, and tissue injury. The method supports studies of cardiac development and disease, evaluation of experimental treatments, and histopathological diagnosis.

Histological Staining of Neural Tissue

2023

In order to examine the cellular, structural and molecular layout of tissues and organs, researchers use a method known as histological staining. In this technique, a tissue of interest is preserved using chemical fixatives and sectioned, or cut into very thin slices. A variety of staining techniques are then applied to provide contrast to the visually uniform sections. In the study of neuroanatomy, histological techniques are frequently applied to visualize and study nervous system tissue.

Source: Brown, A. O., et al. Visualization of Streptococcus pneumoniae within Cardiac Microlesions and Subsequent Cardiac Remodeling. J. Vis. Exp. (2015).This video demonstrates the microscopic visualization of bacterial microlesions in mouse heart tissue. The heart of a mouse infected with Streptococcus pneumoniae is harvested, washed, and fixed before being processed to obtain coronal sections. These sections are stained with hematoxylin and eosin and examined under a microscope to visualize...
