Isolated Lung Preparation

Isolated lung preparation is an ex vivo experimental technique in which a lung is removed from the body and maintained under controlled laboratory conditions to study respiratory physiology. The organ is typically ventilated through the airways while a perfusion solution circulates through its blood vessels, allowing researchers to regulate pressure, flow, gases, and chemical exposures independently of whole-animal influences. This preparation preserves key features of pulmonary structure and function, supporting investigations of gas exchange, vascular responses, edema, inflammation, and drug effects. By enabling direct measurement and manipulation of lung processes, it provides a valuable model for biology, pharmacology, and respiratory disease research.
