Metabolism Screening

Metabolism screening is the systematic assessment of how cells, tissues, or organisms transform nutrients and other compounds, providing insight into biological function and health. It typically measures changes in substrate consumption, product formation, enzyme activity, or metabolic flux under defined conditions, often comparing normal and experimentally treated samples. In biology, these measurements help identify altered pathways, characterize cellular responses, evaluate drug or toxin effects, and detect metabolic signatures associated with disease. By linking biochemical reactions to observable changes in growth, energy use, and cellular behavior, metabolism screening supports research in physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, and biotechnology.

Here, we establish a metabolic profiling platform integrating three-dimensional (3D) glioma spheroids and imaging-based normalization via extracellular flux analysis. This approach enables more accurate assessment of tumor metabolic responses to drug treatments and provides insights into potential mechanisms of resistance.

Zebrafish represent a powerful vertebrate model that has been under-utilised for metabolic studies. Here we describe a rapid way to measure the in vivo metabolic profile of developing zebrafish that allows the comparison of different mitochondrial function parameters between genetically or pharmacologically manipulated embryos, thereby increasing the applicability of this organism.

What is Metabolism?

2019

Overview Metabolism represents all of the chemical activity in a cell, including reactions that build molecules (anabolism) and those that break molecules down (catabolism). Anabolic reactions require energy, whereas catabolic reactions provide it. Thus, metabolism describes how cells transform energy through a variety of chemical reactions, which are often made more efficient with the help of enzymes. An Introduction to Cell Metabolism

2023

In cells, critical molecules are either built by joining together individual units like amino acids or nucleotides, or broken down into smaller components. Respectively, the reactions responsible for this are referred to as anabolic and catabolic. These reactions require or produce energy typically in the form of a “high-energy” molecule called ATP. Together, these processes make up “Cell Metabolism,” and are hallmarks of healthy, living cells.JoVE’s introduction to cell metabolism briefly...

alamarBlue Assay: A Sensitive Fluorometric Method to Screen the Cytotoxic Effects of Artificial Tear Formulations on Metabolic Activity of Human Corneal Epithelial Cells

2025

This video describes an in vitro fluorometric assay to assess the effects of artificial tear formulations on the cellular metabolic activity of corneal epithelial cells using resazurin-based Alamar blue solution. A non-toxic formulation maintains the cells in a healthy, metabolically active state, facilitating the reduction of resazurin into a highly fluorescent resorufin.
