Subtotal Gastrectomy

Subtotal gastrectomy is a surgical procedure that removes part of the stomach while preserving the remaining gastric tissue, providing treatment for selected gastric cancers and other serious stomach disorders. After resection, the surgeon restores gastrointestinal continuity by connecting the remaining stomach to the duodenum or jejunum, using reconstruction approaches such as Billroth I, Billroth II, or Roux-en-Y. The operation can remove diseased tissue and relieve obstruction or bleeding, but it also changes gastric capacity, digestion, and nutrient absorption. Clinical management therefore includes surveillance for recurrence, dietary adjustment, and monitoring for complications such as weight loss, anemia, or postgastrectomy syndromes.
