Embryonic Induction

Embryonic induction is a developmental process in which one group of embryonic cells, called the inducer, directs the fate and behavior of nearby responding cells, helping establish organized tissues and body axes. It works through short-range or secreted molecular signals that alter gene expression in competent cells; the response depends on the inducer, the recipient tissue, and the timing of their interaction. In developmental biology, classic examples such as neural induction and signaling by the Spemann organizer show how cell communication coordinates tissue specification, pattern formation, and morphogenesis. Studying these interactions clarifies congenital disease mechanisms and informs research on stem-cell differentiation, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine.

We describe the use of a mouse ES cell based assay to identify critical time windows for Wnt/β-catenin and BMP signal activation during cardiogenic induction. The method provides a standardized platform that reliably quantifies cardiogenic efficiency, and it is applicable to the study of other cell lineages.

Here, we describe a method for isolation, culture and manipulation of mouse embryonic pancreas. This represents an excellent ex vivo system for studying various aspects of pancreatic development, including morphogenesis, differentiation and growth. Pancreatic bud explants can be cultured for several days and used in a range of different applications, including whole-mount immunofluorescence and live imaging.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN This experiment will use inductive coils to demonstrate the concept of inductor and inductance. Magnetic induction will be demonstrated using a rod magnet inserted into or extracted away from the core of a coil to induce a transient electromotive force (emf) voltage in the coil, measured by a voltmeter. This experiment will also demonstrate the mutual inductance between...
