Benthic Suspension Feeders

Benthic suspension feeders are bottom-dwelling organisms that obtain food by filtering suspended particles from the surrounding water, making them important links between the water column and seafloor ecosystems. Structures such as gills, tentacles, cilia, or specialized filtering appendages capture plankton, organic matter, and other particles as water passes over or through the body, while unwanted material is expelled. Sponges, bivalves, barnacles, and many polychaete worms use this strategy in marine and freshwater habitats. Their feeding can remove particles, recycle nutrients, influence water clarity, and transfer energy to benthic communities, making these organisms valuable indicators of environmental change and ecosystem function.

We introduce the VacuSIP, a simple, non-intrusive, and reliable method for clean and accurate point sampling of water. The system was developed and evaluated for the simultaneous collection of the water inhaled and exhaled by benthic suspension feeders in situ, to cleanly measure removal and excretion of particulate and dissolved compounds.
