Intraperitoneal Implantation

Intraperitoneal implantation is a medical procedure that places a device, graft, biomaterial, or therapeutic tissue within the peritoneal cavity, the space surrounding many abdominal organs. Clinicians typically access this compartment through the abdominal wall and position the implant so it can remain in contact with the peritoneal lining or deliver treatment locally; the peritoneum may also influence fluid exchange, inflammation, and tissue integration. Applications include drug delivery, dialysis access, tissue engineering, and experimental cell or organ transplantation. Careful implant selection and placement are essential for minimizing infection, adhesions, organ injury, and other complications while achieving the intended therapeutic effect.

Source: Martinez, E., et al. Intracranial Pharmacotherapy and Pain Assays in Rodents. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).This video demonstrates the intracranial administration of an analgesic drug in an anesthetized rat with a pre-implanted guide cannula in the prefrontal cortex. An additional analgesic drug is co-administered intraperitoneally. Following recovery, the rat’s thermal pain response is assessed using Hargreave’s apparatus, where paw withdrawal latency is measured to evaluate the analgesic...
