Non-invasive Treatment

Non-invasive treatment comprises medical interventions that diagnose, manage, or relieve disease without surgical incisions or instruments entering body tissues. Depending on the therapy, medicines act through molecular targets after topical or systemic delivery, while external modalities apply controlled energy, pressure, temperature, or mechanical stimulation to influence tissue function; clinicians adjust treatment using patient response and monitoring. These approaches include physical therapy, external radiation, focused ultrasound, and medication-based care, offering alternatives to invasive procedures when appropriate. By reducing tissue damage, anesthesia needs, and recovery time, non-invasive treatment can improve safety, comfort, and access across clinical medicine while supporting personalized care.

Models of tumor cell invasion into three-dimensional extracellular matrix better reflect the in vivo situation than two-dimensional motility assays. Using matrix invasion assays combined with confocal imaging of fluorescently-labeled cells, detailed information on invasion modes and the distinct contributions of leading versus following cells can be obtained.

Invasion Assay Using 3D Matrices

2023

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a network of molecules that provide a structural framework for cells and tissues and helps facilitate intercellular communication. Three-dimensional cell culture techniques have been developed to more accurately model this extracellular environment for in vitro study. While many cell processes during migration through 3D matrices are similar to those required for movement across rigid 2D surfaces, including adherence, migration through ECM also requires cells...

Spheroid Assay to Measure TGF-β-induced Invasion

An assay to quantitatively measure Transforming Growth Factor (TGF)-β-induced invasion in 3-dimensional collagen gels is described. This assay takes advantage of the MCF10A series of cell lines, which represent different stages of breast cancer development. This method can be adopted to be used with other cell lines and might be used to investigate other potential activators or inhibitors of invasion.
