Membranous Labyrinth Exposure

Membranous labyrinth exposure is a surgical and anatomical approach used to reveal the delicate, fluid-filled system of ducts and sacs within the inner ear. The membranous labyrinth contains endolymph and houses sensory structures, including the cochlear and vestibular organs; exposure requires careful removal or dissection of surrounding bone while preserving these fragile components. In neuroscience, this approach enables direct study of auditory and balance pathways, supports investigation of inner-ear anatomy and function, and provides access for examining how sensory signals arise from hair-cell activity. Its precision is important for linking microscopic structure with hearing, equilibrium, and related disorders.

2013

A whole-body nanoparticle aerosol inhalation exposure facility was constructed for nano-sized titanium dioxide (TiO2) inhalation toxicology studies. This system provides nano-TiO2 aerosol test atmospheres that have: 1) a steady mass concentration; 2) a homogenous composition free of contaminants; and 3) a stable particle size distribution during aerosol generation.

2012

Herein is described a robotic approach to high-throughput crystallization of membrane proteins in lipidic mesophases for use in structure determination using macromolecular X-ray crystallography. Three robots capable of handling the viscous and sticky protein-laden mesophase integral to the method are introduced.
