Neuronal Cells

Neuronal cells, or neurons, are specialized cells that receive, process, and transmit information throughout the nervous system, making rapid communication and coordinated behavior possible. Their mechanism depends on changes in membrane potential: incoming signals alter ion flow across the cell membrane, potentially generating an action potential that travels along the axon and triggers neurotransmitter release at synapses. In neuroscience, studying neuronal structure, electrical activity, connectivity, and signaling helps explain sensory processing, movement, learning, and memory. Neuronal cell research also supports investigations of brain development, neurological disease, neural injury, and therapeutic strategies such as drug development and neural prosthetics.

The neuronal membrane proteasome (NMP) was recently identified in a subset of somatosensory neurons as a key regulator of touch, pain, and itch perception. This article presents a robust workflow for analyzing cell-type-specific NMP expression and function using cell sorting, transcriptome profiling, and culture-based immunofluorescent analyses.

The video showcased a cell culture method for differentiating neural progenitor cells into neurons. By incubating cells in a nutrient-rich medium supplemented with growth factors, the progenitor cells matured into neurons with developed axons and dendrites. A stabilizing agent ensured cell viability and protected against oxidative damage throughout the differentiation process.
