Somatosensory Stimulation

Somatosensory stimulation is the controlled activation of sensory systems that detect touch, pressure, vibration, temperature, pain, and body position, making it a valuable tool for studying how the nervous system represents the body. Mechanical, thermal, electrical, or other targeted stimuli activate receptors in the skin, muscles, and joints, which transmit signals through peripheral nerves and the spinal cord to somatosensory regions of the brain. In neuroscience, these methods help characterize sensory pathways, cortical processing, perception, and neural plasticity. Somatosensory stimulation also supports research on sensory disorders, pain mechanisms, motor rehabilitation, and interventions designed to restore or enhance functional sensation.

Optogenetic techniques have made it possible to study the contribution of specific neurons to behavior. We describe a method in larval zebrafish for activating single somatosensory neurons expressing a channelrhodopsin variant (ChEF) with a diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) laser and recording the elicited behaviors with a high-speed video camera.

The somatosensory cortex in the parietal lobes is crucial for interpreting sensory data such as touch, temperature, and proprioception. The somatosensory cortex, situated in the parietal lobes, plays a vital role in interpreting sensory information like touch, temperature, and proprioception—awareness of body position. This specialized brain region features an organized structure wherein neurons at the top primarily process sensations originating from the lower body. In contrast, those at the...
