Muscles of the Forearm that Move the Hand and Fingers

The muscles that move the hand and fingers are divided into two groups &#8212; the anterior and the posterior compartment muscles.
The anterior compartment muscles flex the wrists, digits, and thumbs and pronate the hand.
The superficial layer of the anterior compartment is made up of the flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, and flexor carpi ulnaris&#160; muscles. The flexor digitorum superficialis lies under these three muscles and is the largest of the superficial muscles.
The anterior deep layer comprises the flexor pollicis longus and flexor digitorum profundus muscles.
The posterior compartment muscles extend the wrists, fingers, and thumbs and supinate the hand.
The superficial layer of the posterior compartment is made up of the extensor carpi radialis longus , extensor carpi radialis brevis , extensor digitorum , extensor digiti minimi&#160; and extensor carpi ulnaris .
The posterior deep layer is made up of the abductor pollicis longus, extensor pollicis brevis, extensor pollicis longus, and extensor indicis.

The forearm muscles that move the wrist, hand, and fingers are grouped into anterior and posterior compartments. These muscles work together to bend, straighten, and stabilize the hand and digits. They also connect to the bones of the wrist and hand in organized layers.

The anterior compartment contains the flexor muscles. These muscles usually start at the humerus and attach to the carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges. The superficial layer includes the flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, and flexor carpi ulnaris. Beneath them is the flexor digitorum superficialis, a large superficial muscle that helps flex the fingers.

The deep anterior compartment has two muscles. The flexor pollicis longus flexes the distal phalanx of the thumb. The flexor digitorum profundus ends in four tendons that attach to the distal phalanges of the fingers.

The posterior compartment contains the extensor muscles. These muscles also begin on the humerus and mainly straighten the wrist and digits. The superficial layer includes the extensor carpi radialis longus, extensor carpi radialis brevis, extensor digitorum, extensor digiti minimi, and extensor carpi ulnaris. The extensor digitorum covers much of the back of the forearm and splits into four tendons that attach to the middle and distal phalanges of the fingers.

The deep posterior compartment includes four muscles. These are the abductor pollicis longus, extensor pollicis brevis, extensor pollicis longus, and extensor indicis. Together, they help extend the thumb and fingers. The extensor carpi ulnaris sits on the medial side of this group.

Strong fasciae keep the tendons close to the bones, and tendon sheaths reduce friction. At the wrist, the deep fascia forms retinacula, which are fibrous bands that hold the tendons in place. The flexor retinaculum lies on the palm side of the carpal bones and forms the carpal tunnel, where the median nerve and the tendons of the flexor digitorum superficialis, flexor digitorum profundus, and flexor pollicis longus pass. On the back of the wrist, the extensor retinaculum holds the extensor tendons of the wrist and digits.
