Oxygenic Photosynthesis

La fotosintesi ossigenata sfrutta l'energia luminosa per convertire l'acqua e l'anidride carbonica in glucosio e ossigeno. I fototrofi ossigenati, come i cianobatteri e le alghe, utilizzano pigmenti di clorofilla incorporati nelle loro membrane tilacoidali, che derivano dall'avvolgimento della membrana plasmatica. I cianobatteri organizzano questi pigmenti in due fotosistemi: Fotosistema I, P700 e Fotosistema II, P680. Il fotosistema II ossida l'acqua, rilasciando ossigeno, protoni ed elettroni. Oxygenic photosynthesis is the process plants, algae, and cyanobacteria use to capture light energy and turn it into chemical energy. It uses water as the source of electrons and releases molecular oxygen, or O2. The process also produces ATP and NADPH, which cells need for later energy use and carbon fixation.

The main reactions happen in the thylakoid membranes, where chlorophyll pigments absorb light. In cyanobacteria, these membranes come from folds in the plasma membrane. Two photosystems work together there: Photosystem II, or PSII, with reaction center P680, and Photosystem I, or PSI, with reaction center P700.

PSII starts the electron transport chain by oxidizing water in the oxygen-evolving complex. This step releases protons, electrons, and oxygen. The electrons then move to pheophytin and are passed through plastoquinone, or PQ, to the cytochrome b6f complex. This complex pumps protons across the membrane and helps build the gradient needed for ATP production.

Next, plastocyanin, a copper-containing carrier, moves electrons from cytochrome b6f to PSI. Light re-energizes the electrons in PSI, and they are passed through an iron-sulfur protein to ferredoxin. Ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase then reduces NADP+ to NADPH.

The proton gradient across the thylakoid membrane powers ATP synthase. This enzyme uses chemiosmosis to convert ADP into ATP. The ATP made here supplies energy for the Calvin cycle, where carbon fixation takes place.

In some conditions, electrons from PSI can cycle back into the electron transport chain. This cyclic electron flow makes extra ATP, but it does not produce NADPH or O2. It helps balance the ATP to NADPH ratio when the cell needs more ATP.
