Liver Spheroids

Liver spheroids are three-dimensional aggregates of liver cells that reproduce key aspects of tissue organization and function in a controllable laboratory model. They form when hepatocytes, often combined with supporting cells, self-assemble through cell-cell adhesion and extracellular matrix interactions, creating internal gradients of oxygen, nutrients, and metabolites that influence cell behavior. In bioengineering, liver spheroids support drug screening, hepatotoxicity testing, disease modeling, and studies of liver regeneration by maintaining functions that may decline in conventional two-dimensional cultures. Their tunable size, cellular composition, and culture conditions also make them useful for developing bioartificial liver systems and more predictive human tissue models.
