Monolithic Zirconia

Monolithic zirconia is a fully ceramic material made from zirconium dioxide, valued in bioengineering for its high strength, fracture resistance, and suitability for load-bearing dental restorations. Most formulations use yttria to stabilize zirconia in a metastable tetragonal phase; when mechanical stress reaches a crack tip, the material can transform toward the monoclinic phase, expand locally, and hinder crack propagation. Digital design and computer-aided manufacturing shape monolithic zirconia into crowns, bridges, and implant-supported restorations without a veneering porcelain layer. Its combination of mechanical reliability, ceramic aesthetics, and tissue-compatible performance supports durable restorative solutions and ongoing development of advanced biomedical components.

2026

This study successfully uses MIL-96(Al) Metal-Organic Frameworks particles to stabilize Pickering emulsions, which serve as templates to form mechanically robust, hierarchically porous monolithic materials. This method allows scalable MOF shaping while preserving crystal integrity. Tuning formulation is key to controlling pore size, interconnectivity, permeability, and robustness.
