Polyvinyl Alcohol Cryogel

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) cryogel is a water-rich, elastic polymer network formed by structuring an aqueous PVA solution at subzero temperatures, making it useful as a tunable biomaterial in bioengineering. During repeated freeze-thaw cycles, ice crystals concentrate PVA chains in unfrozen regions, enabling hydrogen bonding and crystallite formation that physically crosslink the polymer without requiring chemical crosslinkers. The resulting cryogels combine high water content, flexibility, interconnected pores, and adjustable mechanical properties. These features support applications such as tissue-mimicking materials, wound dressings, drug delivery systems, and scaffolds for regenerative research, where hydration, permeability, and mechanical performance must be balanced.

Cited by 20 •

2012

A useful tool to analyze the effects of drugs, growth factors, and/or manipulated cells in an animal model of wound repair is described. This technique utilizes the properties of a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sponge to deliver and contain the desired treatment and also provide a platform to be excised and analyzed.

Anisotropic Polyvinyl Alcohol Phantom Fabrication for Ultrasound Elastography: Procedure and Quality Controls

2024

Here, we present a protocol for derivatizing medical devices with protein therapeutics by conjugating protein therapeutics to a polyvinyl alcohol membrane casted on medical devices. Conjugation of protein-based therapeutics allows for localized and concentrated delivery and is a cost-effective approach that requires vastly lower drug amounts for dosing while minimizing off-target effects.
