Ultraviolet Disinfection

Ultraviolet disinfection is a physical method for reducing microorganisms in water, air, and on surfaces without adding chemical disinfectants. It typically uses germicidal UV-C radiation, which is absorbed by microbial DNA or RNA and creates lesions such as pyrimidine dimers that disrupt replication and prevent effective reproduction. In biological and public-health settings, UV systems help control bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens in laboratories, drinking-water treatment, healthcare environments, and food-processing areas. Their performance depends on dose, exposure time, wavelength, and surface or fluid conditions, and because UV leaves no lasting residual, treated materials can be recontaminated afterward.

Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) Spectroscopy

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy is one of the most popular analytical techniques because it is very versatile and able to detect nearly every molecule. With UV-Vis spectroscopy, the UV-Vis light is passed through a sample and the transmittance of light by a sample is measured. From the transmittance (T), the absorbance can be calculated as A=-log (T). An absorbance spectrum is obtained that shows the absorbance of a...

Cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization are the methods that help to break the infection chain and prevent disease. Cleaning The cleaning process usually involves using water with detergents or enzymatic cleaner and removing foreign material from objects and surfaces, including organic material such as body fluids or inorganic material like soil. Cleaning is performed before high-level disinfection and sterilization because foreign materials on the cover of the devices interfere with process...

Ultraviolet and Visible (UV–Vis) Spectroscopy: Overview

2024

Ultraviolet–visible (UV–visible or UV–Vis) spectroscopy is an analytical technique that investigates the interaction between matter and UV–Vis light within the electromagnetic spectrum. This method is widely used for its versatility, simplicity, and relatively quick data acquisition, making it valuable for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. When UV–Vis radiation passes through a material, molecules absorb light depending on the energy required for electronic transitions. As a result...

Determining Viral Disinfection Efficacy of Hot Water Laundering

2022

In response to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, a laboratory protocol was developed to test the viral disinfection efficacy of hot water laundering of cloth face coverings, cotton scrubs, and denim pants. The Phi6 virus (bacteriophage) was used as the organism to test disinfection efficacy.
