Stereotactic Neuronavigation

Stereotactic neuronavigation is an image-guided method that uses three-dimensional brain maps to plan and guide precise placement of instruments or treatment targets, which is especially important when managing tumors near critical structures. It works by registering preoperative or intraoperative imaging to the patient’s anatomy, allowing a tracked surgical tool to be displayed in relation to the planned target and surrounding tissue. In cancer research and neurosurgical practice, this approach supports tumor biopsy, resection, and delivery of localized therapies while helping researchers evaluate targeting accuracy and treatment outcomes. Its use can improve procedural planning and enable less invasive, more individualized interventions.

Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) involves image-guided, ablative radiation delivered to cancer targets refractory to chemotherapy or to conventional radiation treatment. The robotic-armed Cyberknife SBRT system, using sophisticated target localization, delivers hypofractionated radiation doses capable of sterilizing cancer targets. This article will consider new therapeutic roles of SBRT for gynecological cancers.

Stereotactic injection of lentiviruses expressing cDNAs or shRNAs can modulate gene expression in specific brain areas of mice. Here, we present a protocol to combine stereotactic injections with behavioral tasks, such as the Open Field Test (OFT) and the Forced Swim Test (FST).
