Silicon Oxide Functionalization

Silicon oxide functionalization is the chemical modification of silica surfaces to introduce reactive organic or inorganic groups, tuning their interfacial properties for applications in chemistry and materials science. The process commonly begins with surface silanol groups, which react with organosilanes through hydrolysis and condensation to form covalent Si–O–Si linkages; reaction conditions such as moisture, solvent, and pH influence coating quality and stability. Functionalized silicon oxide can provide tailored wettability, chemical selectivity, biocompatibility, or binding sites, supporting applications in sensors, chromatography, catalysis, drug delivery, and immobilization of biomolecules.

Here we describe a simple method for patterning oxide-free silicon and germanium with reactive organic monolayers and demonstrate functionalization of the patterned substrates with small molecules and proteins. The approach completely protects surfaces from chemical oxidation, provides precise control over feature morphology, and provides ready access to chemically discriminated patterns.

Here, we present a protocol to make a bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) magnetic for applications in damaged blood vessel reconstruction. The BNC was synthesized by G. xylinus strain. On the other hand, magnetization of the BNC was realized through in situ precipitation of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ferrous ions inside the BNC mesh.
