Sulfate Compounds

Sulfate compounds are substances that contain the sulfate ion, SO₄²⁻, or sulfate-derived groups, making them an important class of inorganic salts and organic derivatives in chemistry. In ionic sulfates, sulfur is bonded to four oxygen atoms in a tetrahedral structure, and the overall 2− charge is balanced by metal or ammonium cations; sulfate esters form when sulfuric acid groups bond to organic molecules. Their solubility, acidity, and redox behavior depend on the associated ions and molecular structure. Sulfate compounds are used in fertilizers, detergents, pigments, pharmaceuticals, and industrial processes, while their analysis supports environmental monitoring and materials research.

Solubility of Ionic Compounds

2020

Solubility is the measure of the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in a given quantity of solvent at a given temperature and pressure. Solubility is usually measured in molarity (M) or moles per liter (mol/L). A compound is termed soluble if it dissolves in water. When soluble salts dissolve in water, the ions in the solid separate and disperse uniformly throughout the solution; this process represents a physical change known as dissociation. Potassium chloride (KCl) is an example...

Sulfate Attack on Concrete

2024

Sulfate attack on concrete is a deterioration process characterized by a whitish discoloration beginning at the edges and corners, accompanied by cracking and spalling. This phenomenon occurs when sulfates react with the components of hardened concrete, forming compounds like calcium sulfate and calcium sulfoaluminate which occupy more space than the substances they replace, causing the concrete to expand and disrupt. Sulfates from sources like soil, groundwater, or industrial effluents...
