Carotid Pulse

The carotid pulse is the rhythmic expansion of the carotid artery produced when the left ventricle ejects blood into systemic circulation, providing a readily accessible indicator of cardiovascular function. Clinicians assess it by gently palpating the side of the neck beside the trachea, noting the pulse’s presence, rate, rhythm, amplitude, and symmetry while avoiding simultaneous pressure on both arteries. In clinical practice, the carotid pulse helps evaluate cardiac output and arterial perfusion, identify abnormal rhythms or diminished blood flow, and rapidly assess circulation during emergencies. Its timing relative to heart sounds can also support assessment of valve disorders and other hemodynamic abnormalities.

This describes a partial carotid ligation surgery, which causes disturbed flow conditions and subsequent atherosclerosis development (in two weeks) with intraplaque neo-vascularization (in four weeks) in the mouse common carotid artery. We also describe a novel method of RNA isolation from the carotid intima, providing high purity endothelial RNA.

When the heart pumps blood out, arterial elastic fibers play a crucial role in sustaining a high-pressure gradient. They expand to accommodate the received blood and then recoil - a process known as the pulse that can be either manually palpated or electronically quantified. Despite a reduction in its effect with increased distance from the heart, elements of the pulse's systolic and diastolic components persist, observable even at the arteriole level. The pulse serves as a clinical indicator...
