Heart Rhythm Analysis

Heart rhythm analysis is the systematic evaluation of the heart’s electrical activity to determine whether cardiac impulses are generated and conducted in a regular, coordinated pattern. In clinical practice, electrocardiography records electrical signals from the heart, allowing clinicians to assess heart rate, rhythm regularity, waveform features, and timing intervals that reflect impulse formation and conduction. This analysis can identify abnormalities such as atrial fibrillation, bradycardia, tachycardia, and conduction disturbances. It supports diagnosis, risk assessment, treatment selection, and monitoring, while longer recordings from ambulatory devices can reveal intermittent rhythm changes that a brief examination may miss.

Disturbances in Heart Rhythm

2025

Arrhythmia or dysrhythmia refers to an abnormal heart rhythm caused by a defect in the heart's conduction system. It can cause the heart to beat irregularly, too quickly, or too slowly, leading to symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, and fainting. Factors such as stress, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, certain drugs, congenital defects, diseases, and electrolyte abnormalities can trigger arrhythmias. Arrhythmias are categorized by their speed, rhythm, and origin. A slow heart...

Recording and Analysis of Circadian Rhythms in Running-wheel Activity in Rodents

2013

Circadian rhythms in voluntary wheel-running activity in mammals are tightly coupled to the molecular oscillations of a master clock in the brain. As such, these daily rhythms in behavior can be used to study the influence of genetic, pharmacological, and environmental factors on the functioning of this circadian clock.

Design and Analysis of Temperature Preference Behavior and its Circadian Rhythm in Drosophila

We recently identified a novel Drosophila circadian output, temperature preference rhythm (TPR), in which the preferred temperature in flies rises during the day and falls during the night. TPR is regulated independently from another circadian output, locomotor activity. Here we describe the design and analysis of TPR in Drosophila.

We have developed a Semi-automated Optical Heartbeat Analysis method (SOHA) for analyzing high speed optical recordings from Drosophila, zebrafish and embryonic mouse hearts. We demonstrate the application of our methodology to the analysis of heart function in fruit fly and embryonic mouse hearts.
