Pre-assembled Sponge Electrodes

Pre-assembled sponge electrodes are ready-to-use medical electrode assemblies that provide a soft, conductive interface between electronic equipment and the body, simplifying electrode placement in clinical and research settings. Their porous sponge layer is moistened with saline or conductive gel, allowing ions to carry electrical signals across the skin while the compliant material conforms to body contours and supports consistent contact. These electrodes can facilitate transcutaneous electrical stimulation, bioelectrical signal recording, and electrophysiological studies without requiring users to construct the interface during each experiment. Standardized assembly may improve setup efficiency, reproducibility, and access to electrical measurement or treatment in medicine.

The goal of the reported protocols is to create rechargeable zinc-sponge electrodes that suppress dendrites and shape change in zinc batteries, such as nickel–zinc or zinc–air.

Implantation of an Electrode Assembly in a Mouse Brain for Electrophysiological Recording

2025

This video demonstrates a technique for implanting an electrode assembly into a mouse brain. The assembly contains bipolar electrodes to record activity from the hippocampus and a reference electrode to obtain baseline activity from the cerebellum. An anesthetized mouse is placed on a stereotaxic frame, and the electrode assembly is implanted in the target brain region. The animal is then allowed to recover before performing electrophysiological recording.

2018

This protocol describes the use of plastic chips to culture and compartmentalize primary murine neurons. These chips are preassembled, user-friendly, and compatible with high-resolution, live, and fluorescence imaging. This protocol describes how to plate rat hippocampal neurons within these chips and perform fluidic isolation, axotomy and immunostaining.
