Rat Forelimb Model

The rat forelimb model is an experimental animal system used to study forelimb anatomy, motor control, sensation, and recovery in medicine. Researchers create or observe defined changes, such as nerve injury, spinal cord damage, stroke-related deficits, or musculoskeletal disease, and then assess function through tasks that measure reaching, grasping, strength, coordination, and skilled movement. Because forelimb performance can be quantified alongside tissue and neurological changes, this model helps investigators examine disease mechanisms, evaluate surgical or pharmacological interventions, and test rehabilitation strategies. Findings can guide the development of treatments for motor impairment while supporting controlled, repeatable preclinical research.

The skilled reaching scale divides the movement by a forelimb in a reach for food act into composite elements each of which are evaluated with a three-point scale. The rating scale is described for a normal rat and can be applied toward evaluating neurological motor disorders.

(2017)This video demonstrates the induction of an acute electroconvulsive seizure (ECS) in a rat model to study seizure-induced neuroplasticity. Researchers apply electrical stimulation via ear-clip electrodes, triggering neuronal hyperexcitability and clonus. This model helps investigate synaptic plasticity, seizure...
