Scala Tympani

The scala tympani is a fluid-filled chamber within the cochlea, a spiral-shaped structure of the inner ear that converts sound vibrations into neural signals. Filled with perilymph, it is separated from the scala media by the basilar membrane and connects with the scala vestibuli at the helicotrema; pressure waves generated by stapes movement travel through these cochlear compartments and are relieved at the round window. This fluid pathway helps establish the mechanical forces that move the basilar membrane and stimulate sensory hair cells, supporting frequency-specific hearing. Its anatomy also guides cochlear implant electrode placement and informs research on hearing loss and inner-ear disorders.

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure to implant a cochlear device in a deafened mouse and apply electrical stimuli to record auditory brainstem responses. This procedure enables to understand the basic mechanisms of electrical hearing and can contribute to advancements in cochlear implant technology and auditory neuroscience.

Viral Vector-Based Gene Therapy for Hearing Restoration in a Mouse Model

Source: Akil, O., et al., Surgical Method for Virally Mediated Gene Delivery to the Mouse Inner Ear through the Round Window Membrane. J. Vis. Exp. (2015)This video demonstrates the procedure of delivering a therapeutic gene into the inner ear of a mouse pup with genetically induced hearing loss. Using an adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector, the gene is injected through the round window membrane, allowing viral particles to enter hair cells, restore glutamate transporter production, and...

Abdominal Exam II: Percussion

Source: Alexander Goldfarb, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, MA Medical percussion is based on the difference in pitch between the sounds elicited by tapping on the body wall. The auditory response to tapping depends on the ease with which the body wall vibrates, and is influenced by underlying organs, strength of the stroke, and the state of the body wall. There are three main medical percussion sounds: resonance (heard over lungs), tympany (heard over...
