Umbilical Artery Doppler

Umbilical artery Doppler is a noninvasive ultrasound technique that measures blood-flow patterns between the fetus and placenta, helping assess placental function during pregnancy. Using pulsed-wave Doppler, clinicians analyze the velocity and direction of blood flow across the cardiac cycle, including resistance indices and end-diastolic flow. Increased resistance, absent end-diastolic flow, or reversed end-diastolic flow can indicate impaired placental perfusion and elevated risk of fetal growth restriction or adverse outcomes. In medicine, these measurements support antenatal surveillance, guide decisions about monitoring and delivery, and provide objective information for managing high-risk pregnancies.

Positioning Laser Doppler Probe: A Technique to Implant Probe Over Middle Cerebral Artery for Blood Flow Measurement in Murine Model

2025

This video describes the surgical procedure to immobilize the laser Doppler probe over the murine brain's middle cerebral artery, or MCA. The probe helps to measure the blood flow in the brain's microvasculature by measuring the Doppler shift caused due to the motion of red blood cells within the artery.

Several animal models of cerebral ischemia have been developed to simulate the human condition of stroke. This protocol describes the endothelin-1 (ET-1) induced middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model for ischemic stroke in rats. In addition, important considerations, advantages, and shortcomings of this model are discussed.
