Drug Administration

Drug administration is the delivery of a therapeutic compound into the body to produce a desired biological effect, and it is essential for studying and treating disorders of the nervous system. Drugs may be given by routes such as oral, intravenous, intraperitoneal, or intracerebral injection; each route influences absorption, distribution, metabolism, and the compound’s ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and reach neural targets. In neuroscience, controlled drug administration enables researchers to examine neurotransmitter systems, neural circuits, behavior, and dose-response relationships. It also supports preclinical evaluation of treatments for conditions including pain, epilepsy, neurodegeneration, and psychiatric disease.

Drug self-administration and ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) are used as behavioral assessments in animal research, but rarely in combination. The purpose of this article is to describe the advantages of recording USVs during drug self-administration procedures to assess affective responses to drug experience.

Source: Kanazawa, T., et al. Novel Methods for Intranasal Administration Under Inhalation Anesthesia to Evaluate Nose-to-Brain Drug Delivery. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the intranasal administration of radiolabeled drugs in an anesthetized mouse to achieve nose-to-brain drug delivery. It explains how drugs cross the nasal epithelium and travel via neuronal pathways to reach the brain, as well as how ciliary motion influences drug retention and clearance. Additionally, the video...

Self-administration Studies

Behavioral reinforcement induced by the rewarding feelings following substance use sometimes leads to addiction, which is demonstrated by increased self-administration. Drug self-administration studies in rodents model human behavior during drug abuse. These models are useful in understanding the neurobiological behavior of addiction in order to help scientists discover new treatments for drug dependence. This video reviews the concepts underlying self-administration studies. A general...

Routes of Drug Administration: Overview

2023

Drug administration involves delivering drugs to the body through various routes, such as enteral, parenteral, and topical. Enteral administration refers to drugs absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. They can be swallowed (perorally), placed under the tongue (sublingually), or on the inner lining of the cheeks (buccally). Perorally administered drugs take time to be absorbed and have a slower onset of action. The rectal route is another form of enteral administration, which allows for...
