Electrocautery Pen

An electrocautery pen is a handheld surgical instrument that uses controlled heat to cut, coagulate, or seal tissue, making it important for precise hemostasis during medical procedures. In a typical device, electrical energy heats a metal tip; when the tip contacts tissue, thermal energy denatures proteins and seals small blood vessels, while careful control of temperature, contact time, and pressure limits collateral damage. In neuroscience and neurosurgery, electrocautery pens help control bleeding and maintain a clear operative field during procedures involving delicate brain or spinal tissues. Their use supports microsurgical precision, although excessive heat can injure nearby neural structures.

Source: Rennert, R. C., et al. Comprehensive Endovascular and Open Surgical Management of Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformations. J. Vis. Exp. (2017).This video demonstrates the open surgical resection of a cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in a human brain. The procedure involves creating a bone flap, accessing the subarachnoid space, identifying and occluding feeding arteries and draining veins, and carefully removing the AVM. Intraoperative angiography confirms complete resection,...

In this article a high-throughput protocol for fast and reliable determination of gene expression levels in single or bulk C. elegans samples is described. This protocol does not require RNA isolation and produces cDNA directly from samples. It can be used together with high-throughput multiplexed nanofluidic real-time qPCR platforms.
