Electrophysiological Activity

Electrophysiological activity is the generation and transmission of electrical signals by excitable cells, especially neurons, and provides a direct measure of nervous system function. It arises when ion channels regulate the movement of charged particles across cell membranes, producing changes in membrane potential that can form action potentials and influence synaptic communication. In neuroscience, researchers measure these signals with methods such as patch-clamp recording, extracellular electrodes, electroencephalography, and calcium-linked approaches to examine neural circuits and brain states. These measurements support the study of sensory processing, behavior, neurological disorders, and the effects of drugs or stimulation on neuronal function.

Measuring the Electrophysiological Activity of Neuronal Networks Using Micro-Electrode Arrays

2025

The video demonstrates how to use a microelectrode array (MEA) to record the electrophysiological activity of neurons derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs). Electrophysiological activity from a multiwell MEA containing a neuron-astrocyte co-culture is recorded to detect action potentials from multiple neurons in the network, confirming the successful differentiation of hiPSCs into neurons.

This video demonstrates the detailed procedure for preparing an anesthetized rat for electrophysiological recordings of brain activity from multiple sites. The scalp is dissected to access the skull, and holes are drilled at precise locations to install and secure electrodes. Tungsten microwire electrodes are then inserted into the targeted location to record the data.
