Guide Cannula Implantation

Guide cannula implantation is a stereotaxic neurosurgical procedure that places a small hollow tube into a precisely defined brain region, creating stable access for repeated measurements or localized interventions. During implantation, the cannula is aligned with anatomical coordinates, advanced through the skull to the target, and secured so an injector, electrode, or sampling probe can later pass through it while minimizing repeated tissue disruption. In neuroscience, this approach supports intracranial drug delivery, microdialysis, behavioral pharmacology, and recordings in awake animals. It enables researchers to connect molecular or neural activity with behavior and to study circuit function, disease mechanisms, and treatment responses over time.

Source: Xavier, A. L. R., et al. Cannula Implantation into the Cisterna Magna of Rodents. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the procedure for implanting a cannula into the cisterna magna of an anesthetized mouse. The technique involves guiding a needle-mounted cannula through the dura into the inverted triangular cisterna magna and securing it for targeted delivery into the cerebrospinal fluid.

Here we describe a protocol to perform cisterna magna cannulation (CMc), a minimally invasive way to deliver tracers, substrates and signaling molecules into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Combined with different imaging modalities, CMc enables glymphatic system and CSF dynamics assessment, as well as brain-wide delivery of various compounds.

Implantation of a totally implantable venous access port (TIVAP) through the subclavian vein under CT guidance is a highly safe and precise method that can effectively reduce the incidence of complications and facilitate early detection of potential complications.

Ultrasound-Guided Implantation: A Technique to Implant Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Cells into an Adult Mouse
