Plastic Cylinder Method

The Plastic Cylinder Method is a behavioral assay used to measure spontaneous forelimb use and motor asymmetry in laboratory rodents, making it valuable for assessing neurological function. In the test, an animal explores a transparent cylinder and rears against its walls; researchers record the forepaw or forepaws used for support, then quantify asymmetry in wall-contact behavior. The method is commonly applied in neuroscience to evaluate motor deficits after unilateral brain injury, including stroke models, and to monitor functional recovery over time. Because it requires limited equipment and provides a direct behavioral outcome, it complements histological, molecular, and other neurological assessments.

2015

Classical forelimb asymmetry analysis of the cylinder test is routinely used to assess behavioural deficits in rats following brain injury or stroke; however, it fails to detect consistent deficits in mice. This study demonstrates that quantifying paw-dragging behaviour is a more sensitive analysis of brain injury in mice.

Drosophila Aggression Assay: A Method to Test Behavioral Plasticity in Flies

2023

Aggression is an innate behavior and previous fighting experience affects fighting strategy and outcome of later contests in flies. This video describes an assay used to study Drosophila's aggressive behavior. The example protocol features the assay performed in a setup that eliminates fly handling and therefore reduces stress for the animals, which would otherwise impact the subjects' performance.

Cylinders in Three-Dimensional Space

2026

A cylindrical surface is generated when a two-dimensional profile curve is translated along a straight line in three-dimensional space. The translated copies of the curve form a surface composed of parallel rulings, each oriented in the same fixed direction. This construction allows many three-dimensional forms to be described using relatively simple planar equations. In Cartesian coordinates, a cylindrical surface is often recognized by an equation that omits one of the three variables. For...

Microplastics act as vector of potentially toxic organic contaminants with unpredictable effects. This protocol describes an alternative methodology for assessing the levels of organochlorine pesticides adsorbed on plastic pellets and identifying the polymer chemical structure. The focus is on pressurized fluid extraction and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
