Ventral Hippocampus

The ventral hippocampus is the anterior portion of the hippocampal formation and a key brain region for linking memory with emotion, stress, and motivation. It integrates contextual, sensory, and internal-state information and communicates with regions including the amygdala, hypothalamus, and prefrontal cortex through coordinated neural pathways. These connections allow ventral hippocampal activity to influence anxiety-like behavior, stress responses, reward processing, and the emotional significance of experiences. In neuroscience research, studying this region helps clarify hippocampal circuit organization and provides insight into conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, and stress-related disease.

Combined In Vivo Anatomical and Functional Tracing of Ventral Tegmental Area Glutamate Terminals in the Hippocampus

2020

The current protocol demonstrates a simple method for tracing of ventral tegmental area (VTA) glutamate projections to the hippocampus. Photostimulation of VTA glutamate neurons was combined with CA1 recording to demonstrate how VTA glutamate terminals modulate CA1 putative pyramidal firing rate in vivo.

Comprehensive Profiling of Dopamine Regulation in Substantia Nigra and Ventral Tegmental Area

Dopamine is distinctly regulated in the midbrain nuclei, which contain the cell bodies and dendrites of the dopamine neurons. Here we describe a dissection and sample-handling approach to maximize results, and thus conclusions and insights, on dopamine regulation in the midbrain nuclei of the substantia nigra (SN) and ventral tegmental area (VTA) in rodents.

Co-culturing of Ventral Hippocampal and Nucleus Accumbens

2025

This video demonstrates the process of preparing ventral hippocampal and nucleus accumbens tissues from mouse brains for co-culture. Neurons extend projections to form synaptic connections between the ventral hippocampal and nucleus accumbens tissues. This method allows studying neuronal interactions between these two brain regions, offering insights into cognition, behavior, and neurological disorders.

Imaging Nicotine-Induced Calcium Signaling along Ventral Hippocampal Axons in Synaptic Co-Cultures

2025

This video demonstrates how nicotine-mediated activation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the mouse ventral hippocampus results in sustained calcium signaling along the axons.

In Vitro Recording of Theta Oscillations in the Mouse Hippocampus

2025

This video demonstrates the recording of rhythmic neuronal network activity, also known as theta oscillations, in an isolated hippocampus. Electrodes are inserted into various layers and spatial positions to detect and analyze theta oscillations. This shows the unique neuronal compositions and the connectivity of the neuronal network across different layers of the hippocampus.
