Long Term Goals

Long-term goals are desired outcomes that guide behavior over an extended period, helping people organize present actions around future priorities. In psychology, pursuing them depends on processes such as motivation, planning, self-regulation, and delayed gratification: individuals define an outcome, divide it into manageable steps, monitor progress, and adjust strategies when circumstances change. Because immediate rewards can compete with distant benefits, effective goal pursuit often involves strengthening commitment, managing distractions, and using feedback to maintain effort. Studying long-term goals helps explain achievement, behavior change, well-being, and persistence across education, work, health, and personal development.

Antipsychotic drugs are a crucial treatment method for acute and chronic psychoses, bipolar illness, and behavioral disorders. The selection of these drugs depends on several factors, including the state of the disease, clinical judgment, possible drug interactions, and the patient's sensitivity to adverse effects. In immediate scenarios, such as delirium and dementia, short-term treatment with low doses of high-potency typical or atypical agents can effectively manage symptom exacerbation. For...

Source: Diego Reinero & Jay Van Bavel—New York University People are social chameleons and regularly engage in nonconscious behavioral mimicry. This occurs when an individual unwittingly imitates the behaviors of another person, such as crossing one's legs moments after a person sitting adjacent does so, or adjusting one's body posture to match a conversation partner. Rapport between two people increases behavioral mimicry, just as mimicry also increases rapport. Psychologists have posited...

Here we describe methods to test C. elegans associative learning and short- and long-term associative memory. These population assays employ the worms abilities to chemotax toward volatile odorants, and form positive associations upon pairing food with the chemoattractant butanone. Increasing the number of conditioning periods induces long-term memory.

Source: Calvo-Rodríguez, et al. Fluorescence and Bioluminescence Imaging of Subcellular Ca2+ in Aged Hippocampal Neurons. J. Vis. Exp. (2015). This video demonstrates the use of fluorescence imaging to measure cytosolic calcium levels in short-term and long-term rat hippocampal cultures. By comparing young and aged neurons, it highlights how increased L-type voltage-gated calcium channel density and prolonged activation in aged neurons result in calcium overloading, a hallmark of neuronal aging.
