電子伝達鎖では、NADHおよびFADH₂からの高エネルギー電子がタンパク質複合体を通過し、膜を横切るプロトンのポンピングを駆動します。
NADHからの電子は複合体Iに入り、複合体を通って移動し、複合体I、III、IVを介して約10個の陽子を送り込みます。
FADH₂からの電子は、プロトンを励起しないコンプレックスIIに入ります。その結果、FADH2は膜を横切るプロトンを6つだけポンピングするのに寄与しています。
プロトンの動きは、濃度勾配と電気勾配の両方を作成し、プロトンの原動力をまとめて生成します。
