Qcm-d Analysis

QCM-D analysis (quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring) is a label-free technique that measures tiny changes in mass and viscoelastic properties at a sensor surface, making it useful for characterizing biomolecular and cellular interfaces. It operates by driving a quartz crystal at resonance and tracking shifts in resonance frequency and energy dissipation as materials adsorb, bind, swell, or reorganize on the surface. In bioengineering, researchers use QCM-D to study protein adsorption, membrane formation, hydrogel hydration, nanoparticle interactions, and cell attachment under controlled liquid conditions. These measurements help reveal interfacial structure and mechanical behavior, supporting the design of biosensors, biomaterials, drug-delivery systems, and tissue-engineering platforms.

To obtain basic information on the sorption and recycling of gold from aqueous systems the interaction of Au(III) and Au(0) nanoparticles on S-layer proteins were investigated. The sorption of protein polymers was investigated by ICP-MS and that of proteinaceous monolayers by QCM-D. Subsequent AFM enables the imaging of the nanostructures.

Human tumor xenografts are vascularized and infiltrated by cells of mouse origin during the growth phase in vivo. To circumvent the bias caused by these contaminating cells during downstream analysis, we developed a method allowing for comprehensive depletion of all mouse cells by magnetic cell sorting.
