Confined Diffusion Space

Confined diffusion space refers to a physical compartment in which molecules, especially water, move within restricted boundaries rather than through an unrestricted medium. In neuroscience, cell membranes, organelles, axons, and the extracellular matrix limit molecular motion, producing diffusion patterns shaped by compartment size, geometry, permeability, and barriers. Measuring these patterns with diffusion-sensitive methods, including diffusion magnetic resonance imaging and microscopy, helps characterize neural tissue structure and organization. This framework supports investigation of axonal pathways, cellular architecture, tissue damage, and neurodegenerative changes, linking microscopic restrictions on molecular movement to measurable signals and potential biomarkers of brain function and disease.

We describe the use of pulsed laser deposition (PLD), photolithography and wire-bonding techniques to create micrometer scale complex oxides devices. The PLD is utilized to grow epitaxial thin films. Photolithography and wire-bonding techniques are introduced to create practical devices for measurement purposes.

Confocal Imaging of Confined Quiescent and Flowing Colloid-polymer Mixtures

Confocal microscopy is used to image quiescent and flowing colloid-polymer mixtures, which are studied as model systems for attractive suspensions. Image analysis algorithms are used to calculate structural and dynamic metrics for the colloidal particles that measure changes due to geometric confinement.

Diffusion in Agar ExpandNOTE: In this exercise, you will be given agar containing an indicator chemical called phenolphthalein. When phenolphthalein is exposed to the normal alkaline conditions in the agar, it will look pink. But when it is exposed to neutral or acidic conditions, it changes from pink to clear. You will make different size and shaped agar cubes as a model for cells to study the impact of cell size and shape on diffusion rate. To make the first set of cells, measure out and cut...

Cell Membranes and Diffusion In order to function, cells are required to move materials in and out of their cytoplasm via their cell membranes. These membranes are semipermeable, meaning that certain molecules are allowed to pass through, but not others. This movement of molecules is mediated by the phospholipid bilayer and its embedded proteins, some of which act as transport channels for molecules that otherwise would not be able to pass through the membrane, such as ions and carbohydrates.
