Mouse Brain Cortex

The mouse brain cortex is the layered outer region of the cerebrum that supports sensory processing, movement, learning, and other complex behaviors, making it a central model for neuroscience research. Its six cortical layers contain interconnected neurons and glial cells that receive, transform, and transmit information through synaptic signaling, with local circuits linking sensory inputs to motor and cognitive outputs. Researchers study the mouse cortex to investigate neural development, circuit organization, plasticity, and disease mechanisms, using approaches such as electrophysiology, microscopy, genetic manipulation, and behavioral analysis. Findings from these studies help clarify fundamental brain function and inform models of neurological disorders.

Isolation of Microglia from the Cortex of an Adult Mouse Brain

2025

The video demonstrates a technique for isolating microglia from the cortex of an adult mouse brain. First, the cortex undergoes segmentation and homogenization to remove neurons and other glial cells, preserving microglia. Following that, the cell suspension is exposed to anti-myelin magnetic microbeads and a magnetic field, effectively separating microglia and myeloid cells from myelin debris and cells containing myelin.

Generation of Medial Thalamus-Anterior Cingulate Cortex Slices from Mouse Brains

2025

The video demonstrates the preparation of medial thalamus-anterior cingulate cortex (MT-ACC) slices from mouse brains. A mouse's brain is dissected, cuts are made to expose the MT-ACC pathway, and slices are generated using a vibratome. The MT-ACC slices are then maintained in oxygenated artificial cerebrospinal fluid.

Isolating and Culturing Oligodendrocyte Precursor Cells from Mouse Pup Brain Cortex

Neural progenitor mitosis is a critical parameter of neurogenesis. Much of our understanding of neural progenitor mitosis is based on analysis of fixed tissue. Live imaging in embryonic brain slices is a versatile technique to assess mitosis with high temporal and spatial resolution in a controlled environment.
