Neural Cell Analysis

Neural cell analysis is the systematic characterization of neurons and glial cells to determine their structure, identity, function, and responses to stimuli. Researchers combine microscopy, immunostaining, electrophysiological recording, and molecular assays to measure features such as morphology, membrane activity, protein expression, and gene profiles, often comparing cells across developmental or disease conditions. These measurements reveal how neural cells communicate, maintain circuits, and change after injury or treatment. In neuroscience, neural cell analysis supports studies of brain development, neurodegeneration, neural networks, and drug effects, while single-cell approaches can resolve differences among individual cells that are obscured in population-level measurements.

Here is a protocol to grow pluripotent stem cells (PSC) and neural stem cells (NSC) in an enclosed cell culture system that permits maximum sterility and reproducibility, replacing the traditional biosafety cabinet and incubator. This equipment meets clinical good manufacturing practice (cGMP) and clinical good lab practice (cGLP) guidelines.

An approach to analyze the migration of explanted cells (trunk neural crest cells) is described. This method is inexpensive, gentle, and capable of distinguishing chemotaxis from both chemokinesis and other influences on migratory polarity such as those derived from cell-cell interactions within the primary trunk neural crest cell culture.
