Avian Species

Avian species are birds, a diverse group of vertebrates distinguished by feathers, beaks, lightweight skeletons, and adaptations for flight, making them important subjects in biology and ecology. Their physiology combines endothermy with efficient lungs and air sacs that support high metabolic demands, while reproduction typically involves internal fertilization and the development of hard-shelled eggs. Studying avian species helps researchers investigate evolution, migration, behavior, ecosystem dynamics, and responses to environmental change. Birds also serve as indicators of habitat quality and disease transmission, so avian research informs biodiversity conservation, wildlife management, and the protection of threatened populations.

Scavengers have potential to translocate infectious transmissible spongiform encephalopathy prions in their feces to disease-free areas. We detail methods used to determine if mouse-adapted scrapie prions remain infectious after passage though the digestive tract of American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos), a common consumer of dead animals.

Begin with a suspension of avian pathogenic E. coli or APEC in growth media.APEC is a Gram-negative bacterium that infects poultry by entering through the respiratory tract. After breaching the mucosal layer, APEC adhere to epithelial cells, multiply locally, and disrupt the epithelial barrier to enter the bloodstream. The bacteria then spread to multiple organs, causing systemic infection.Add an equal volume of the bacterial suspension to each well of a multi-well plate containing increasing...

Herpesvirus of turkeys (HVT) is widely used as a vector platform for the generation of recombinant vaccines against a number of avian diseases. This article describes a simple and rapid approach for the generation of recombinant HVT-vectored vaccines using an integrated NHEJ-CRISPR/Cas9 and Cre-Lox system.

Simulating Colonization and Extinction on Islands ExpandForm groups of three. One member of the group will simulate colonization by throwing balls into the groups of cups representing the islands. Another will simulate extinction by rolling dice to randomly remove balls from the cups. The third group member will record the data. Take time to familiarize yourself with the four island stations. NOTE: There are two large islands with 12 cups and two small islands with 6 cups. Two of the stations...
