Field-grown Crops

Field-grown crops are plants cultivated in open agricultural settings, where their growth, development, and productivity depend on interactions among genetics, soil, water, sunlight, climate, and living organisms. Unlike plants maintained under controlled conditions, these crops experience changing environmental conditions that influence photosynthesis, nutrient uptake, pollination, and responses to pests or disease. Studying field-grown crops connects plant biology with ecology and agriculture, helping researchers assess how organisms function in complex environments and how management practices affect yield, resilience, biodiversity, and sustainable food production. Field observations and experiments also provide essential evidence for improving crop performance under variable conditions.

We present a protocol for counting durum wheat and barley ears, using natural color (RGB) digital photographs taken in natural sunlight under field conditions. With minimal adjustments for camera parameters and some environmental condition limitations, the technique provides precise and consistent results across a range of growth stages.

How to Create Conditioned Taste Aversion for Grazing Ground Covers in Woody Crops with Small Ruminants

Here we describe a detailed method for growing primary human bronchial epithelial cells from explants of human bronchial airway tissue including differentiated growth on an air-liquid interface. This method provides an abundant source of primary cells for investigating the role of the airway epithelium in human lung health and disease.
