Magnetic Vessel Separation

Magnetic vessel separation is a biological technique that isolates blood vessels or vessel-associated cells from complex tissue samples using magnetic forces. In a typical workflow, target structures are selectively labeled with magnetic particles, then exposed to a magnetic field that retains the labeled material while unlabeled tissue and debris are removed through washing or fractionation. This approach can enrich vascular components for microscopy, molecular analysis, cell culture, and studies of angiogenesis or vascular disease. By reducing sample complexity, magnetic vessel separation supports more focused characterization of endothelial and other vessel-associated populations, although separation quality depends on labeling specificity and sample preparation.

Perivascular spaces (PVS) are fluid-filled spaces around the brain blood vessels involved in fluid drainage. To examine alterations in PVS during a small vessel stroke, perform magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the basal ganglia region in the patient’s brain. The imaging protocol includes the T2-weighted fast spin echo and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequences.T2-weighted imaging enhances the contrast between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-filled PVS and surrounding tissue.FLAIR...

Source: Alexander S Rattner and Kevin Rao Li Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The objective of this experiment is to demonstrate the phenomenon of stability of floating vessels - the ability to self-right when rolled over to the side by some external force. Careful design of hull shapes and internal mass distribution enables seagoing vessels to be stable with low drafts (submerged depth of hull), improving vessel...
