Wild Caterpillar Analysis

Wild caterpillar analysis is the systematic study of caterpillar specimens collected or observed in natural environments to characterize their identity, form, behavior, and ecological roles. It commonly combines field observations with examination of external traits such as body shape, coloration, hairs, prolegs, and feeding patterns, while considering habitat and host-plant associations. These observations help distinguish species and developmental stages, document biodiversity, and clarify relationships between herbivorous insects and plants. In biology, wild caterpillar analysis supports ecological surveys, conservation planning, studies of plant-insect interactions, and investigations of how environmental conditions influence larval development and distribution.

A Simple Protocol for Extracting Hemocytes from Wild Caterpillars

2012

Insect hemocytes carry out many important functions, both immune and non-immune, throughout all stages of insect development. Our present knowledge of hemocyte types and function comes from studies on insect genetic models. Here, we present a method for extracting, quantifying and visualizing hemocytes from wild caterpillars.

Wild-Type Blocking PCR to Detect Low-Frequency Somatic Mutations

2025

This video describes wild-type blocking polymerase chain reaction, or WTB-PCR, which detects somatic mutations. The PCR-based technique uses a locked nucleic acid, or LNA, an oligonucleotide that binds to its complementary wild-type allele and blocks its elongation. The blocking selectively allows the amplification of low-level mutant alleles over their wild-type variants in the sample.

(2019).This video demonstrates the procedure for introducing a plasmid carrying a target gene into amoeba cells via electroporation, followed by recovery in a bacterial supplement to enable efficient gene delivery in wild-type amoeba.

Phenotypic Comparison of Wild-Type and Mutant Strains of Streptomyces coelicolor

Source: Bennett, J. A., et al. Visual and Microscopic Evaluation of Streptomyces Developmental Mutants. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the cultivation and phenotypic comparison of wild-type and mutant Streptomyces coelicolor strains. It outlines procedures for minimizing spontaneous mutations, preventing cross-contamination, and promoting bacterial growth through proper plating techniques. Finally, the video highlights visual differences in colony morphology to illustrate the...
