Silent Ischemia

Silent ischemia is a form of myocardial ischemia in which the heart muscle receives insufficient oxygen-rich blood without producing recognizable angina or other warning symptoms. It commonly arises when narrowed coronary arteries cannot increase blood flow enough to meet myocardial demand, causing transient electrical or functional changes that may occur without chest pain. Clinical evaluation may use electrocardiography, ambulatory monitoring, exercise stress testing, or imaging to identify these otherwise unnoticed episodes. Recognizing silent ischemia can reveal underlying coronary artery disease, guide risk assessment and treatment, and help prevent serious outcomes such as myocardial infarction.

Glutamatergic synapses can switch from an active mode to a silent mode. We demonstrate that presynaptic activity status in dissociated culture of rodent neurons is visualized using a fixable form of the FM1-43 dye to visualize active synapses and immunostaining with vGluT-1 antibody to visualize all glutamate synapses.

Measuring the Contralateral Silent Period Induced by Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

This video demonstrates a technique for measuring the contralateral silent period (cSP) using transcranial magnetic stimulation. Position the patient's hand prone and place an electrode on the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscle. Then, place a force-measuring device between the thumb and index finger. Identify the primary motor cortex (M1) region of the brain. Maintain a standardized pressure on the force-measuring device and stimulate the M1 region to record the muscle activity, termed the...

Here we describe the detailed procedure of intestinal ischemia-reperfusion in mice which results in reproducible injury without mortality to encourage the standardization of this technique across the field. This model of intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury can be utilized to study the cellular and molecular mechanisms of injury and regeneration.
