Direct Cortical Stimulation

Direct cortical stimulation is a neurosurgical technique that applies controlled electrical currents to the exposed cerebral cortex to identify functional regions while preserving healthy brain tissue. During awake or anesthetized procedures, brief stimulation temporarily activates or disrupts local neural networks, and clinicians observe changes in movement, sensation, speech, vision, or cognition. This functional mapping helps surgeons distinguish eloquent cortex from areas that can be safely removed when treating brain tumors or drug-resistant epilepsy. By linking cortical sites to specific behaviors, direct cortical stimulation supports more precise surgical planning, reduces the risk of neurological deficits, and advances understanding of human brain organization.

Source: Beom, J., et al. Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to the Unilateral Hemisphere of Rat Brain. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates the application of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in anesthetized rats to modulate cortical excitability. The procedure involves determining the motor threshold (MT) to establish baseline stimulation, followed by applying rTMS at an intensity above the MT to induce neuronal depolarization. This stimulation triggers...

2013

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that has shown initial therapeutic effects in several neurological conditions. The main mechanism underlying these therapeutic effects is the modulation of cortical excitability. Therefore, online monitoring of cortical excitability would help guide stimulation parameters and optimize its therapeutic effects. In the present article we review the use of a novel device that combines simultaneous tDCS and...

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is an established technique to modulate cortical excitability1,2. It has been used as an investigative tool in neuroscience due to its effects on cortical plasticity, easy operation, and safe profile. One area that tDCS has been showing encouraging results is pain alleviation 3-5.

Impact of Direct Current Stimulation on Evoked Epileptic Seizures in Mouse Brain Slices

2025

The video demonstrates a study for assessing the impact of direct current stimulation (DCS) on epileptic seizures in mouse brain slices. The brain slices containing the connected medial thalamus (MT) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) regions are placed in a multielectrode array (MEA). Electrical stimuli to the MT and seizure-inducing drugs are applied to induce epileptic seizures in the ACC. DCS is then applied to assess its impact on evoked seizures.

(2019)This video demonstrates the process of real-time EEG-triggered transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to study cortical excitability. The procedure involves positioning the TMS coil over the motor cortex, synchronizing stimulation with specific phases of the EEG signal, and recording motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) to explore...
