Preclinical Testing

Preclinical testing is the stage of medical research that evaluates a prospective drug, vaccine, device, or therapy before it is administered to humans, helping researchers assess its potential benefits and risks. Studies use laboratory methods such as cell-based assays and in vivo models to examine biological activity, dose response, pharmacokinetics, and toxicity under controlled conditions. The findings guide candidate selection, formulation, dosing, and decisions about whether a product is ready for clinical trials. In medicine, preclinical testing can identify safety concerns early, clarify mechanisms of action, and provide evidence for regulatory applications, although results from experimental models do not fully predict human outcomes.

The most notable symptom of migraine is severe head pain, and it is hypothesized that this is mediated by sensory neurons innervating the meninges. Here, we present a method to locally apply substances to the dura in a minimally invasive manner while using facial hypersensitivity as an output.

Preclinical Development: Overview

2023

Preclinical development consists of a series of tests that ensure the safety and efficacy of a new therapeutic compound before it is tested in humans. There are four main phases to this process. First, safety pharmacology tests are conducted to ensure the drug does not produce any acutely harmful effects. These tests examine parameters such as bronchoconstriction, cardiac dysrhythmias, blood pressure changes, and ataxia. Next, preliminary toxicological testing is performed to determine the...
