Gamma Band Synchronization

Gamma band synchronization is a pattern of coordinated neural activity in which oscillations roughly 30–100 Hz align in timing across neurons or brain regions. It matters because this temporal coordination can organize information processing and provide a measurable signal of communication in the nervous system. Through interactions between excitatory neurons and fast-spiking inhibitory interneurons, rhythmic synaptic activity adjusts the phase and timing of neuronal firing, allowing distributed populations to synchronize. Researchers study gamma synchronization with electroencephalography, local field potentials, and computational models to investigate attention, perception, learning, and memory, while altered synchrony is examined as a potential marker of circuit dysfunction in neurological and psychiatric conditions.

The pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) is located in the brainstem and its neurons are maximally activated during waking and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep brain states. This work describes the experimental approach to record in vitro gamma band subthreshold membrane oscillation in PPN neurons.

AC Synchronous Machine Synchronization

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Three-phase wound-rotor synchronous generators are the main source of electrical power worldwide. They require a prime mover and an exciter in order to generate power. The prime mover can be a turbine spun by fluid (gas or liquid), thus the sources of the fluid can be water running off a dam through a long nozzle, steam from water evaporated using burned coal, etc. Most power plants including coal,...

When two or more atoms come together to form a molecule, their atomic orbitals combine and molecular orbitals of distinct energies result. In a solid, there are a large number of atoms, and therefore a large number of atomic orbitals that may be combined into molecular orbitals. These groups of molecular orbitals are so closely placed together to form continuous regions of energies, known as the bands. The energy difference between these bands is known as the band gap. Conductor, Semiconductor,...
