Neuronal Population Activity

Neuronal population activity is the collective pattern of electrical signaling produced by groups of neurons, revealing how networks process information beyond the behavior of individual cells. It emerges as neurons integrate synaptic inputs and generate coordinated action potentials, with the timing, synchrony, and firing rates of these signals shaped by circuit connectivity and brain state. In neuroscience, researchers measure population activity using methods such as electrophysiology, calcium imaging, and functional neuroimaging to link neural dynamics with sensation, movement, learning, and behavior. These measurements also help identify circuit dysfunction associated with neurological and psychiatric disorders and guide models of brain computation.

This video demonstrates establishing a neuron-astrocyte co-culture for recording neuronal network activity. Upon establishing the co-culture of motor neurons and astrocytes on a multi-electrode array (MEA) plate, the synchronous rhythmic electrical activity of the neuronal network was recorded extracellularly using the MEA.

Optogenetic techniques have made it possible to study the contribution of specific neurons to behavior. We describe a method in larval zebrafish for activating single somatosensory neurons expressing a channelrhodopsin variant (ChEF) with a diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) laser and recording the elicited behaviors with a high-speed video camera.
