Norm Establishment

Norm establishment is the process of creating reference standards that show how individuals’ scores or behaviors compare with those of a defined population. In psychological assessment, researchers administer a test under standardized conditions to a representative sample, analyze score distributions, and convert raw results into norms such as percentiles, age equivalents, or standardized scores. These norms help psychologists interpret individual performance, identify meaningful departures from typical patterns, and support decisions in clinical, educational, and research settings. Careful sampling and periodic updating are essential because norms can vary across age, culture, language, education, and historical context.

A Minority of One: Conformity to Group Norms

2023

Source: William Brady & Jay Van Bavel—New York University It is obvious that we are influenced by those around us, but in the early to mid 1900's, psychologists began to study how potent social influence can be on our thoughts and behaviors. Motivated in part by attempts to explain the behaviors of Nazi soldiers in World War II, one topic of considerable interest at the time in psychology was conformity, the phenomenon in which people match their attitudes, behaviors, or beliefs to group...

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) uses two key monthly surveys to track employment in the United States. The first is the household survey, also known as the Current population survey or CPS, which collects information from households. The other is the establishment survey, also known as the Current Employment Statistics Survey or CES, where information is collected from business establishments. Most data in the CES is collected through telephone interviews or online reporting by...

Establishing a Whole-Cell Configuration through the Patch Clamp Method

This video demonstrates the whole-cell patch clamp technique in a mouse brain slice. This technique establishes a stable connection between micropipette and neuron membrane, which is further disrupted to establish a whole-cell configuration to study the neuron's health and physiological responses.

Establishing a Mouse Model of Small Fiber Neuropathy Using Resiniferatoxin

2025

This video demonstrates a method for establishing a small fiber neuropathy model in mice using the TRPV1 agonist resiniferatoxin (RTX). It outlines the steps involved in administering RTX to mice and explains how RTX induces neuronal death in small-diameter sensory neurons, thereby establishing the neuropathy model.
