Triceps Skinfold

Triceps skinfold is an anthropometric measurement of subcutaneous fat taken from the back of the upper arm, providing a practical indicator of body fatness. Using skinfold calipers, a trained assessor lifts a standardized fold of skin and underlying fat at the triceps site and records its thickness, typically in millimeters; repeated measurements and consistent technique improve reliability. In statistics and health research, triceps skinfold values support comparisons of nutritional status, body composition, and population differences, and can contribute to regression equations that estimate total body fat. The measure is inexpensive and noninvasive, but interpretation depends on measurement error, assessor skill, age, sex, and reference standards.

This protocol describes the intravital imaging of transgenic mice expressing cell-specific fluorescent markers. Intravital imaging provides a non-invasive method for high-resolution observations in living animals using implantable windows through which the microscopic visualization of processes is possible. This method is especially useful to study longitudinal processes.

Ultrasound imaging is becoming more accessible in clinical and research settings, and a consistent protocol will be beneficial for comparison between studies and for clinical interpretations. This protocol for ultrasound evaluation is a valid and reliable method to evaluate Achilles tendon morphology in healthy, tendinopathic, and ruptured tendons.

Translation of Intravital microscopy findings is challenged by its shallow depth penetration into tissue. Here we describe a dorsal window chamber mouse model that enables co-registration of intravital microscopy and clinically applicable imaging modalities (e.g., CT, MRI) for direct spatial correlation, potentially streamlining clinical translation of intravital microscopy findings.

Ischemic Tissue Injury in the Dorsal Skinfold Chamber of the Mouse: A Skin Flap Model to Investigate Acute Persistent Ischemia

The window of the murine dorsal skinfold chamber presented visualizes a zone of acute persistent ischemia of a musculocutaneous flap. Intravital epi-fluorescence microscopy permits for direct and repetitive assessment of the microvasculature and quantification of hemodynamics. Morphologic and hemodynamic results can further be correlated with histological and molecular analyses.
