

Bing Gu

Professor Dr. Bing Gu is the director of Laboratory Medicine at Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences, Guangzhou, China. He is a visiting scholar at UCLA and Purdue University. He is currently serving as the Vice Chairman of The Youth Committee of the Chinese Society of Laboratory Medicine of the Chinese Medical Association and Vice President of the Society of Laboratory Medicine of China Association of Medical Equipment. He has been awarded the Key Medical Talent of "Strengthening Health through Science and Education" Project, "333 Project", "Six Categories of Talents Plan," and "Liu-Yi Talent Project" of Jiangsu Province. He hosts 1 National Key R&D Plan Project sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, 5 National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects, and eight provincial and ministerial projects as chief investigators. Dr. Gu has published more than 160 peer-review papers with a total impact factor of more than 560 (H-index 34, Citation 4700). He also edited 36 books in the field of clinical laboratory diagnostics.

Liang Wang

Dr. Liang Wang leads a research team as a principal investigator at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital (Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences), the largest comprehensive hospital in Guangdong Province, China. Prof. Wang graduated from Xiang-Ya School of Medicine, Central South University, and then was awarded a PhD from the School of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Western Australia. During his PhD study in Australia, he was also awarded a fellowship from Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and worked at CSIRO as an internship trainee under the supervision of Prof. Matthew Morell and Dr. Ahmed Regina. After graduation, he trained as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Fungal Genomics Center at Concordia University (Montreal, Canada) and the School of Health Sciences at Curtin University (Perth, Australia). Prof. Wang currently serves as a part-time PhD supervisor at the University of Queensland, Australia. For the past five years, Prof. Wang has published more than 80 peer-reviewed papers and edited four books. His laboratory has established collaborations with teams led by Prof. Wei Wang at Edith Cowan University, Prof. Barry Marshall at the University of Western Australia, Prof. Robert Gilbert at the University of Queensland, and Prof. Li Zhang at the University of New South Wales, etc. He is on the editorial board of iMeta, Future Integrative Medicine, and Translational Metabolic Syndrome Research. He has launched five special issues as a topic editor, which involve microbial evolution, metagenomics, and Raman spectroscopy. He also serves as a guest associate editor for Frontiers in Microbiology and Genetics and reviews editor for Communications Biology, Carbohydrate Polymers, and PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, to name a few. His current research interests include but are not limited to microbial physiology, metabolism and evolution, bacterial virulence and antibiotic resistance, rapid detection of microbial pathogens, microbial informatics, meta-omics, and glycogen-related diseases. Prof. Wang is the recipient of the Australia-China Helicobacter Research Fellowship (2019) awarded by the Australia-China Council and Nobel Prize Laureate Professor Barry Marshall.

Yu-Wei Di

Dr. Di obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Medicine from Chongqing Medical University and her Doctor Degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Peking Union Medical College. From 2006 to 2007, she studied in the Department of Pathology of Harvard Medical College as a PhD student. Dr. Di has worked in clinical biochemistry, molecular diagnosis, and flow cytometry groups in the Department of Laboratory Medicine of Guangdong People's Hospital for more than 15 years. She has been a chief technician and technical director for seven years and established a technical management system for the Department. Dr. Di has the qualification certificate of a university teacher and is a part-time teacher at the Medical School of South China University of Technology (SCUT). She is also the group leader of the teaching team in the Department of Laboratory Medicine, focusing on clinical diagnostic training for undergraduate, postgraduate, and visiting students and resident doctors. The achievements of Dr. Di and her team include many awards for teaching competitions. In addition, Dr. Di is also one of the main participants of the SCUT Teaching Reform Project (2022) and Guangdong Provincial Undergraduate University Quality Engineering Construction Project (2022). Dr. Di has presided over several projects funded by the Natural Science Foundation of Guangzhou and Guangdong Province, published more than 20 peer-reviewed papers, edited two books, and authorized one invention patent. Her current research interest mainly focuses on molecular biological detection technology, including but not limited to the rapid detection of microbial pathogens, tumor markers discovery, and intracellular signal transduction.

Jie-Rong Chen

Dr. Jie-Rong Chen is currently working at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital (Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences), one of the largest comprehensive hospitals in Guangdong Province, China. Dr. Chen graduated from Sun Yat-Sen University and was awarded a PhD. Dr. Chen has published more than ten high-quality peer-reviewed papers over the past three years. His current research focuses on precision and translational medicine, including high-throughput sequencing experiments and multi-omics analysis to mine molecular markers related to early diagnosis and prognosis of diseases and exploration of the critical mechanisms of markers for the occurrence and development of diseases. He serves as review editor for Frontiers in Genetics and Frontiers in Medicine.
Molecular diagnostics refers to a collection of molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to nucleic acid amplification, methylation profiling, and mass spectrometry, that aim to predict the potential emergence of a specific disease, such as infectious diseases, inherited conditions, and various cancers at early stages. As for infectious diseases, novel molecular diagnostic methods like metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) have enhanced the capabilities of clinical laboratories to identify and characterize microbial pathogens with a shorter turnaround time and greater detail. In terms of inherited conditions, molecular diagnostics identify genetic and chromosomal variations associated with risk states, significantly improving diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. Cancer is a disease that could be described as body cells growing uncontrollably and spreading to other parts of the body. Its diagnosis includes detections of tumor- or tissue-specific mutations, expressional markers, and tumor-derived molecules. As a result, these techniques hold great promise for noninvasive or minimally invasive disease monitoring in humans. Currently, there are still many challenges in molecular diagnostics caused mainly by non-standard operations. Therefore, it is essential to share methodologies with experimental details to ensure accurate communication of experimental procedures, leading to gold-standard protocols that enable greater transparency. Overall, this Methods Collection of video articles aims to share detailed experimental protocols of molecular diagnostic methods in medical laboratories, facilitating the application of novel and advanced molecular techniques in clinical settings and accelerating progress in this field.
